Tatton Park
National Trust · Manchester
A stunning National Trust estate near Knutsford with a working farm, deer park, adventure playground, and historic mansion. A genuinely brilliant full day out just outside the city.
Why families love it
- The working farm is the real highlight for younger children, with pigs, cows, and chickens to meet plus tractor rides during school holidays and weekends.
- Deer spotting in the historic parkland feels like a proper adventure, especially around the meres where you might see red and fallow deer grazing peacefully.
- The adventure playground near the farm is brilliantly designed for all ages, with separate areas for toddlers and bigger climbing structures for older children.
Best for
Families who want a proper countryside day out without travelling far from Manchester, especially those with children who love animals and outdoor exploring.
Good to know
Parking costs apply even for National Trust members, so factor that in. The site is enormous, so decide which bits you want to focus on before you arrive—doing farm, playground, and mansion properly will easily fill a day. Wellies are genuinely essential after rain as the farm gets properly muddy. The Old Hall tearoom does decent food, but queues can be long at weekends, so consider bringing a picnic.
Practical info
- Age guidance
- Children under five enter the mansion free, though most younger ones prefer spending time at the farm and playground rather than the house tour.
- Typical cost
- National Trust members enter free but non-members pay around £13 for adults and £6.50 for children, plus additional car parking charges which catch people out.
- How long to allow
- You genuinely need a full day to do Tatton justice, especially if visiting the farm, exploring the parkland, and letting children properly enjoy the playground.
