Why families love it

  • The Wohl Pathology Museum contains genuinely arresting preserved specimens that make biology lessons suddenly feel very real and relevant to teenage visitors.
  • Your teens will be genuinely engaged by the surgical instruments collection, which traces medicine from Victorian brutality to modern precision without sugar-coating the grim bits.
  • The history of surgery galleries brilliantly contextualise how recent safe operations actually are, sparking fascinating conversations about medical progress and human resilience.

Best for

Families with teenagers who have strong stomachs and genuine curiosity about medicine, science, or human biology beyond what school textbooks typically cover.

Good to know

The museums are quieter on weekday mornings, giving you more space to linger at exhibits without crowds. Photography is allowed in most areas except the Wohl Pathology Museum. There's nowhere to eat on-site, but you're five minutes from numerous South Side cafes and the excellent Mosque Kitchen for post-visit lunch. The Wohl Pathology Museum genuinely contains human remains and visceral specimens, so have an honest conversation beforehand about whether your teenager is ready for that level of reality.
