London Zoo
ZSL London Zoo · London
Home to over 700 species from gorillas to penguins, London Zoo is a full-day adventure for animal-loving families. The new Land of the Lions is a highlight.
Why families love it
- The Land of the Lions walkthrough is genuinely immersive, letting you watch Asiatic lions from multiple viewpoints including an incredibly close indoor viewing gallery.
- Penguin Beach feeding times are brilliant entertainment, and the keepers genuinely engage with children's questions while explaining each bird's individual personality and quirks.
- Gorilla Kingdom offers proper rainforest atmosphere with viewing platforms at different heights, perfect for shorter children who often miss out at ground-level zoo enclosures.
Best for
Families with stamina for a full day out who want more than just viewing animals, as the interactive keeper talks and multiple play areas mean there's constant engagement.
Good to know
Arrive before opening to avoid queues and head straight to the far end exhibits first, as most families work their way round from the entrance. The Regent's Canal entrance is less crowded than the main gate if you're coming by water bus. Pack snacks as café prices are steep, though there are plenty of picnic spots, and download the zoo app beforehand as the WiFi can be patchy for finding feeding times.
Practical info
- Age guidance
- Children under three go free, and there's genuinely plenty for toddlers with the soft play barn and animal encounters, though primary-aged children probably get the most from it.
- Typical cost
- Tickets are expensive at around £30 for adults and £20 for children, but booking online at least a day ahead saves roughly 10 percent on gate prices.
- How long to allow
- You need a genuine full day to see everything properly without rushing, especially if you want to catch multiple keeper talks and feeding sessions throughout the day.
