Horniman Museum and Gardens
Horniman Museum · London
A quirky free museum in Forest Hill with a famous overstuffed walrus, live aquarium, and lovely gardens. One of London's best kept family secrets.
Why families love it
- The Victorian taxidermy collection features an amusingly overstuffed walrus that has become a beloved internet sensation and absolute favourite with children.
- The aquarium houses fifteen thoughtfully designed displays including jellyfish, seahorses and a mesmerising coral reef tank that genuinely rivals many paid attractions.
- The sixteen acres of sloping gardens offer stunning views across London, plus a brilliant nature trail, butterfly house and animal enclosure with alpacas and goats.
Best for
Families seeking a proper full morning or afternoon out without the central London crowds, especially those with children who love animals and hands-on natural history.
Good to know
The museum café gets packed at lunchtime, so either arrive early or bring a picnic for the gardens which have plenty of space to spread out. The butterfly house requires a separate timed ticket that you collect free from the main desk, but these go quickly on sunny weekends. The steep hill from Forest Hill station is manageable with a pushchair but be prepared for a workout, or take the P4 bus which stops right outside.
