Why families love it

  • The climb up this ancient volcano rewards families with sweeping views across Edinburgh's skyline, the Firth of Forth, and distant hills beyond.
  • Multiple route options mean you can choose between a steep direct ascent or gentler winding paths depending on your children's energy and experience.
  • Holyrood Park's rugged landscape feels wonderfully wild despite being minutes from the city centre, with grassy slopes perfect for post-climb picnics.

Best for

Active families with primary-aged children upwards who enjoy outdoor adventures and don't mind a bit of huffing and puffing for spectacular rewards.

Good to know

The main path from Dunsapie Loch is easier than the steep scramble from the Holyrood side, which involves some minor rock climbing near the top. Trainers with decent grip are essential as the volcanic rock can be slippery when wet. Start early on weekends to avoid crowds at the summit, and bring layers as it's always windier at the top than you expect. The paths aren't buggy-friendly, so this is strictly for confident walkers.
